From a young age, I was immersed in the world of art and culture. I began painting and sculpting early in life. Beneath our home was a large space where there was room for all kinds of creative and physical activities, and at the local club — under the guidance of the late Mr. Braam — we had a wonderful place to learn. There, we could also have our small sculptures fired.
I mainly paint with oil on canvas and Masonite. I also create collages, working with mixed media. Color and diversity define my paintings, both in theme and in style. Color, because the world is full of it — and because it speaks to our imagination as much as to our emotions.
Diversity, because I have many interests and life itself is full of movement. I work intuitively and creatively: impressions are absorbed through observation and later transformed into my work. You could describe my way of working as slow art.
Life is like flowing water, and that is what I try to express in my work. This keeps the creative process challenging for me and allows continuous development to remain visible. In that sense, art is never a “trick” to me — my interpretations must keep moving, just like life itself.
I sculpt mainly in wax and clay. Each sculpture is cast only once in bronze, ensuring that every piece remains unique. For me, the alternation between painting and sculpting is refreshing — a welcome change that is also reflected in the artistic side paths I occasionally explore, such as creating a vase from discarded materials (featured on this website under Other Art).
Adjacent to our home in Lunteren, I have a beautiful studio and exhibition space in the former horse stables. Surrounded by our animals, it is a wonderful place to work. Visitors are also welcome to explore our garden and meet our Mangalica pigs.
My husband supports me with the business side of things and often answers the phone when I’m working.
I always enjoy meeting visitors in person and am happy to share more about my work and creative process.
Kind regards,
Mieke Baak
